Arkadi Monastery
Important historic monastery - a symbol of the struggle for Cretan independence
About This Place
Arkadi Monastery is one of the most important and famous monasteries in Crete, and it is considered the national symbol of the Cretan revolt against Ottoman rule.
In 1866, hundreds of Cretan rebels barricaded themselves in the monastery, and instead of surrendering to the Ottomans, they blew up the powder store and met a heroic death. This event shocked Europe and contributed to international support for Cretan independence.
The monastery is built in Renaissance style and is well-preserved, featuring a central courtyard, a Baroque church, and a small museum.
