Samaria Gorge
The longest gorge in Europe - 16 km of breathtaking hiking
About This Place
The Samaria Gorge is the longest gorge in Europe - 16 km of breathtaking hiking through stunning landscapes. The trail starts at an altitude of 1,250 meters and descends to sea level, through pine forests, impressive rocky cliffs, and changing vistas.
The highlight is ‘the Iron Gates’ - a particularly narrow section where the gorge walls come within just 3 meters of each other and rise to a height of 300 meters!
The gorge is part of the Samaria National Park, home to kri-kri goats and unique vegetation. The hike requires good physical fitness and quality walking shoes.
