Greek Customs and Manners
Familiarizing yourself with the local customs will help you enjoy the experience even more! 🇬🇷
👋 Greetings and Meetings:
- Greeks are warm and hospitable
- A handshake is common, hugs and kisses on the cheeks among friends
- Eye contact is important during conversations
🍷 In Restaurants:
- Take your time - meals are a social experience, not something to rush
- Sharing dishes is common
- If someone says "στην υγειά σας" (stin iYIA sas - cheers), respond back!
- If invited to a meal - bring a small gift (flowers, sweets)
⛪ Churches and Monasteries:
- Modest dress is required: shoulders and knees should be covered
- Women: a scarf for head covering is recommended
- Speak quietly and behave respectfully
🏠 Hosting at Home:
- Greeks are very respectful of guests
- It’s customary to arrive with a small gift
- Shoe removal - depends on the house, follow the hosts' lead
🤝 General Etiquette:
- "Παρακαλώ" (parakalo) and "Ευχαριστώ" (efharisto) go a long way
- Don't rush - the Greek pace is more relaxed
- "Maybe tomorrow" (αύριο - avrio) = not necessarily tomorrow...
- Head nodding upward = no, downward = yes (the opposite of us!)
🎵 Music and Dance:
- If there are traditional dances - feel free to join in!
- Breaking plates is less common today (and expensive...)
